 James Haywood Rolling, Jr., Ed.D.

Dr. James Haywood Rolling Jr. is Dual Associate Professor of Art Education and Teaching and Leadership, and Chair of Art Education, based in both the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education. James earned his Ed.D. in art education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and his M.F.A. in studio arts research from Syracuse University as a Graduate Fellow in the Department of African American Studies.

James recently served as an associate editor of the award-winning SAGE Encyclopedia of Identity, and is a member of the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. His scholarly interests include arts-based research, curriculum & instruction, the reinterpretation of identity, narrative inquiry, and community-engaged scholarship. James has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Art Education Association as Higher Education Division Director. He is a recipient of Syracuse University’s 2011 Meredith Teaching Recognition Award.

As a researcher, James is devoted to telling the story of how we constitute, shape, and reinterpret personal and collective identity.

As an art educator, James works tirelessly so that his Syracuse University Art Education graduates are equipped trained to lead their own students as partners in the development of beautiful and needful objects and products, in expressing both themselves and their communities and contexts, and in critiquing contemporary visual culture while also envisioning the not-yet-visible at the cusp of creation.

As an author, James endeavors to reveal that character begins with sacrifice and creativity begins with social dialogue.

As a partner in Rolling Enterprises Inc., James spearheads Simple Word Publications, the publishing division of the company. Dr. Rolling is represented by the Ayesha Pande Literary Agency.
